The Tiger, the Brahmin and the Jackal

India · Episode 3 · folk tale from the Punjab

Tonight, the caravan stops in India.

A Brahmin lets a tiger out of its cage, the tiger wants to eat him, and only a clever jackal can settle the case.

About the tale

Flora Annie Steel heard this tale from a village boy of the Jatt farming caste in the Gujranwala district of the Punjab (today in Pakistan); it was also heard in the Firozpur and Lahore districts. The journal “Indian Antiquary” printed it in 1883, and in 1894 it went into her book “Tales of the Punjab”, illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, the father of Rudyard Kipling. Nineteenth-century scholars gathered about a hundred versions of the story, from India to Europe. In a twelfth-century Latin book by Petrus Alphonsi the judge is a fox, and in a Russian tale from Afanasyev’s collection an old mare, an old dog and a fox are asked to judge.

A folk tale from the Punjab, retold from “The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal” in Flora Annie Steel’s “Tales of the Punjab” (1894).
