The Archer and the Ten Suns
Tonight, the caravan stops in China.
Ten suns, ten bird brothers, take turns in the sky, one each day. One morning all ten fly out at once, the rice dries up, and an archer with a red bow climbs the highest mountain.
About the tale
The ten suns and the archer Yi appear in Chinese books more than two thousand years old. The “Shan hai jing” (Classic of Mountains and Seas) tells how the ten suns bathe at the Fusang tree and how Di Jun, husband of their mother Xihe, gave Yi a red bow and white arrows; the “Huainanzi” (139 BC) tells how in the days of Emperor Yao all ten suns came out together and scorched the crops. The golden bird whose call the roosters answer comes from E. T. C. Werner, “Myths and Legends of China” (1922). In the old texts the nine suns perish; in our retelling their fire goes out like a candle and they fly home.
A Chinese myth, retold from the ancient texts “Shan hai jing”, “Huainanzi”, “Chu ci” and “Lun heng”, and from E. T. C. Werner’s “Myths and Legends of China” (1922).
