Unamir and the Maiden of the Seventh Heaven

Morocco · Episode 8 · Amazigh folk tale

Tonight, the caravan stops in Morocco.

Each morning Unamir wakes with henna on his hands. He catches one of the sky maidens, and she agrees to be his wife if he builds her seven rooms under one key and lets no one in.

About the tale

A tale of the Shilha (Amazigh, Berber) people of Tazerwalt in southern Morocco, who speak Tashelhit. Hans Stumme published it in German translation, with the Shilha text, in “Märchen der Schluḥ von Tázerwalt” (Leipzig: J. C. Hinrichs, 1895), No. 10, “Die Geschichte von Achmed Unamir”. In the old telling the ending is harsher; we kept its heart: a son’s love for his mother, and the five springs.
