The Troll Who Built Kalundborg Church
Tonight, the caravan stops in Denmark.
Esbern wants to build a church but has too little money, so a troll offers to build it. When the work is done, Esbern must guess the troll’s name, or he will belong to the troll.
About the tale
A Danish legend from the town of Kalundborg on the island of Zealand; the man who wanted to build the church is Esbern Snare, and the troll’s name is Fin. Thomas Keightley retold it as “Kallundborg Church” in “The Fairy Mythology” (new edition, London: George Bell & Sons, 1892), after Thiele’s “Danmarks Folkesagn”. The legend says the church got only three and a half pillars; in fact four granite columns hold up its central tower, and the real church has five towers.
