Opossum Brings Fire
Tonight, the caravan stops in Mexico.
Long ago, fire burned only in the sky, on a rock no bird could reach. Opossum climbs all night, through a waterfall, to the old Grandpa who sits by the fire.
About the tale
A myth of the Cora people of the state of Nayarit, Mexico. K. Th. Preuss printed Cora tellings of it in German translation in “Die Nayarit-Expedition”, vol. 1, “Die Religion der Cora-Indianer” (Leipzig: Teubner, 1912): the fire episode at the end of the myth “Der göttliche Sämann” and the separate story “Der Feuerraub”.
